Shaw 3, Virginia Union 1 – Game 1

After taking a 12-3 lead and maintaining that charge up until the 20th point of the opening set, VUU made a serious run down the stretch to pull within two points (24-22) of Shaw and eventually rallying five-straight to steal set one, 26-24 over the Lady Bears.

Coming out with revenge after letting the first set slip away, the Lady Bears mounted a 12-2 run in set two and would not look back as Shaw galloped to a 25-13 set win and 1-1 tie of the match heading into the third stanza. With a 9-4 scoring advantage in the third set, VUU was forced to call a timeout but out of that break, the Lady Bears struck hard with a 16-6 run to bury the Lady Panthers for a 25-10 win and 2-1 lead.

In the fourth set, VUU had now answer for Shaw as the Lady Bears raced out to a 17-5 lead. The Lady Panthers scored its sixth point on a kill from Kamryn Young but Shaw clipped VUU by scoring six unanswered points in route to a 25-7 win and 3-1 match victory.

Senior Tyler Hunter (Atlanta, GA) poured out a season-high 16 kills, seven digs and five service aces while senior's Jailynn Butler (Parker, AZ), Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) and Amari Fletcher (Phoenix, AZ) all contributed eight kills apiece. Sophomore Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) dished out a 42 assists, 15 digs and two service aces.

Senior Aisja Jones (Red Oak, TX) registered a career-high 18 digs, four services aces while Sosa added 16 stops.

Shaw 3, Virginia State 2 – Game 2

Falling just short of the set win, the Lady Bears trailed Virginia State 1-0 in the round-up finale. VSU claimed a 25-23 set win during the opening frame but the Lady Bears responded in the second set with a 25-21 that featured a hitting percentage of .250 compared to the Trojans .086.

Both teams would split the third and fourth set, the Trojans took the match lead (2-1) with a 25-16 win in the third but Shaw struck back with a 25-10 win in the fourth stanza – this time with a hitting percentage of .545 while holding VSU to -.042.

The fifth set nearly came down to the wire. Shaw had a 4-2 lead ignited by kills from Sosa and senior Destiny Leake (Charlotte, NC) but the Trojans used a 4-1 run to take a 5-4 edge. After three ties and the sets final at 10-even, Shaw scored four-straight (14-10) before VSU snapped the Lady Bears scoring run with a kill from Jailyn Ivey. However, Shaw rattled off a mini-spurt from the Trojans as the Lady Bears scored its final point on a kill from Butler to secure the win.

The victory marked the first five-set win for Shaw this season. Both Sosa and Butler finished with a season-high 18 kills each while Butler added 11 digs and Sosa with eight. Flowers aided 36 assists and 17 digs while Jones also collected 17 stops.

Shaw will continue playing on the road for the next six matches when the Lady Bears travel to Winston-Salem State on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m.
