Box Score BOWIE, Md. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team picked up its 10th conference win of 2019 with a 3-0 sweep of Bowie State University in its Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up finale Sunday afternoon inside the James Complex.
The win extends the Lady Bears win streak to four-matches as Shaw has now swept the CIAA Northern Division schools for the fourth season in a row. Shaw has not lost to a Northern Division school since 2015 when Chowan University was in CIAA conference.
Shaw now stands 10-8 overall and 10-1 in league action while the Bulldogs of Bowie State fall to 5-15 on the season and 3-9 in conference play.
Senior Jailynn Butler led the offensive attack for Shaw with 13 kills and seven digs while sophomore Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) chipped in 25 assists and eight digs. Two Lady Bears finished in double figures for digs anchored by senior Aisja Jones (Red Oak, TX) with 20, followed by senior Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) with 16 stops and seven kills.
Shaw defeated Bowie State in straight sets, including a 25-9 win in set one, 25-5 stand in set two and 25-15 frame in the third stanza. The Lady Bears outhit the Bulldogs 11-3 in the first, 13-3 in the second and 11-7 in the third set as Shaw accounted for a hitting percentage of .252 compared to BSU who registered -.047 from the floor.
Additionally, Shaw held a 16-2 advantage in service aces, 69-46 ratio in digs and 4-2 spread in blocks.
The Lady Bears will return to action Wednesday, Oct. 23 when Shaw plays host to Livingstone College for its annual Dig Pink contest slated for 6 p.m. inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. All fans and spectators are asked to wear pink in support of bringing awareness to Breast Cancer.
