LADY BEARS POWER PAST FAYETTEVILLE STATE, 3-1

Box Score

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team powered past Fayetteville State University for a 3-1 victory and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) division contest Monday night inside the Felton J. Capel Arena. The Lady Bears won the first two sets by the scores of 25-14, 25-19 before falling in the third set, 25-23 but recovering in the fourth for a 25-22 advantage.

The win improves Shaw to 7-8 overall, 7-1 in CIAA action and 4-1 in the South while FSU falls to 5-5 on the year, 5-1 in the CIAA and 3-1 in the South.

Senior Jailynn Butler (Parker, AZ) paced the Lady Bears with 15 kills and nine digs while senior Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) added 11 kills and 11 digs. Senior Aisja Jones (Red Oak, TX) recorded 23 stops while sophomore Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) contributed 37 assists and 12 digs. Senior Tyler Hunter (Atlanta, GA) chipped in 11 digs, nine kills and four blocks in the winning effort for a Shaw team that registered a hitting percentage of .163 for 43 total kills compared to FSU's 47 kills on a hitting attack percentage of .074.

Shaw took a 6-2 lead in the opening set, capped off by a kill from Hunter that led to a Lady Broncos timeout. Out the break, the Lady Bears used a 12-9 scoring margin to hold an 18-11 command, forcing FSU to call another timeout. From there, it was all Shaw as the Lady Bears scored its last six points while holding Fayetteville State to three for the 25-15 set win.

After a slow start in the second frame, Shaw trailed 7-3 to the Lady Broncos but a 3-0 mini run pulled the Lady Bears within one before FSU garnered a point on a kill from Casandra Watson. Shaw took a 13-10 on a 4-0 run and would hold on to its lead of at least three points for the remainder of the way for the 25-19 win and 2-0 lead in the match.

In familiar territory like the Lady Bears match at Winston-Salem State with a 2-0 lead, Shaw looked to put up a better fight this time around in the third set. However, a desperate Fayetteville State team made the third stanza close early on as the stanza featured 13 ties and six lead changes before FSU regained the lead for good after a kill from Watson that ultimately led to a 4-2 run and 25-23 edge over Shaw.

Both teams continued to trade points in the fourth stanza, this time around with 10 ties and five lead changes until the Lady Bears took a two-point lead (22-20) thanks to back-to-back errors from the Lady Broncos. Shaw scored the last two points on an error from FSU and a kill from Butler for the 25-22 win and 3-1 match victory.

Shaw will return to action Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Claflin for a division matchup at 6 p.m. in Orangeburg, S.C.
