WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team took a 2-0 lead before dropping three straight sets, and the match to Winston-Salem State University Thursday night inside Whitaker Gymnasium. The Lady Bears 3-2 setback (25-19, 25-18, 18-25, 25-20, 11-15) to the Rams snapped a six-game win-streak for Shaw who now dips to 6-8 overall and 6-1 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action. 

WSSU improves to 8-5 overall and 5-1 in league action after tonight's win.  

The Lady Bears took control early hitting .167 and .407 in the first two sets to win easily. The momentum of the match changed dramatically beginning in the third set as Shaw managed to hit just .083 compared to the Rams .194 while committing seven errors and WSSU pulling away for the 25-18 win. During the fourth set, both teams stayed closed with one another but the Rams scored five unanswered points to take a 23-17 stand in route to the 25-20 win. 

The decisive fifth set, Shaw never led as the Rams took an early 6-2 lead. The Lady Bears pulled within two twice but WSSU mustered the final two points on an error and service ace for the 3-2 win over Shaw.  

Senior Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) paced Shaw with 15 kills and 16 digs while senior Tyler Hunter (Atlanta, GA) added 13 kills, five digs and four service aces. Senior Jailynn Butler (Parker, AZ) chipped in 12 kills and 10 digs to round out the double figure scoring for Shaw as sophomore Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) tallied 44 assists and eight digs.  

Senior Aisja Jones (Red Oak, TX) finished with 13 stops in the effort for Shaw.  

The Lady Bears will return to action Monday, Oct. 14 at Fayetteville State for a 6 p.m. match.
