LADY BEARS DOWN WINSTON-SALEM STATE IN HOME OPENER

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team shut down Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference foe Winston-Salem State University, 3-0 Thursday night in front of a nice crowd inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

 

Shaw defeated the Rams by the scores of 25-23, 25-14 and 25-12 as a result of a .250 hitting percentage.

 

Thursday's win was the first home contest this season for the Lady Bears (10-6, 7-0 CIAA) as the victory extended Shaw's win-streak to eight-straight – marking the seventh-consecutive conference win and a 1-0 mark in the Southern Division standings.

 

The Lady Bears outhit the Rams (7-11, 6-1 CIAA, 0-1 Southern Division) in all three sets despite the first set being very close, Shaw was responsible for .171 hitting while WSSU posted its best of the night at .133. The first set was a battle for both teams but the Rams went up 18-15 over Shaw after 5-2 spurt. The Lady Bears clawed back while scoring three unanswered points to take a 22-21 lead prior to a kill from junior outside Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) that gave Shaw the 1-0 lead in the match.

 

Shaw opened up the second frame with a blistering 12-4 lead capped off by a block from sophomore middle Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA). The Lady Bears would lead by as many as 13 points before closing out the stanza with a monster kill from junior outside Tyler Hunter (Atlanta, GA) that gave Shaw a 2-0 lead.

 

The Rams were ahead 3-1 early on in the third set but Shaw stole the lead with a 6-1 run to lead 7-4. A service ace from freshman setter Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) led to the Lady Bears outscoring WSSU 17-6 down the stretch for the sweep.

 

Sosa had a strong showing for the Lady Bears as she finished with a match-high 12 kills on a .381 attack percentage to go along with four digs. Senior setter Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) recorded another double-digit assist outing with 22 assist and five digs.

 

Senior libero Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) who was honored before the match for her eclipsing her 1,000th career dig back on Aug. 25 vs. Lynn tallied a match-high 11 digs and three assist in the win.

 

Shaw will return to action on Monday, Oct. 1 with a home match against Fayetteville State University for Greek Night. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
