LADY BEARS WIN 3-1 ON THE ROAD AT LEES-MCRAE

Box Score

BANNER ELK, N.C. – Shaw University women's volleyball (9-6) won its seventh consecutive victory with a 3-1 nonconference match at Lees-McRae College (3-12) Tuesday night at Williams Gymnasium. The Lady Bears defeated the Bobcats, 25-20, 25-22, 26-28 and 25-12.

The win gives Shaw the season sweep over Lees-McRae for the second-consecutive season and the Lady Bears win-streak extends to seven-straight.

LMC had a 10-5 lead in the first set as Shaw played from behind most of the way. A couple of errors from the Bobcats resulted in the score being knotted twice before the Lady Bears put together a 10-5 spread to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

In a back-and-forth exchange, the second set would go down to the wire with the scored tied at 22-even after a kill from Kaci Thornton. The Lady Bears would answer back with a kill from both senior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) and junior Jailynn Butler (Parker, AZ) to put Shaw ahead 24-22, forcing LMC to call a timeout but a miscue from the Bobcats provided the Lady Bears with a 2-0 lead after set two.

In the third set, Shaw established a 15-6 lead but just when it appeared as if the Lady Bears were going to cruise to the 3-0 sweep, LMC scored five unanswered points en route to a 9-3 scoring margin down the stretch to push the contest to set four.

Shaw put forth a much better effort to lead 14-4 midway capped off by a kill from senior right side Jazmine Johnson-McCoy (Seattle, WA) in the fourth set. The Lady Bears held the Bobcats to just eight points for the remainder of the way, scoring the match's last four points for the 3-1 match victory.

Shaw totaled 61 kills with 30 errors in 158 attack attempts (.196), seven service aces, 75 digs and 18 total blocks. Both senior right side Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, US Virgin Islands) and junior outside Tyler Hunter (Atlanta, GA) finished with 10 kills each and Klink posted nine attacks, six blocks and four digs. Meanwhile, senior setter Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) handed out 24 assists and 11 digs while freshman setter Jada Flowers (Valrico, FL) registered a career-high 22 assists, nine digs and three service aces.

The Lady Bears defense was anchored by senior libero Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) who hauled in 19 digs and six assists, followed by junior outside Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) and Butler with 10 stops apiece.

Shaw will return to action Thursday, Sept. 27 for its home opener in the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium against division rival and defending CIAA Champions Winston-Salem State University. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
