LADY BEARS CONCLUDE CIAA ROUND UP II UNDEFEATED

Box Score

RICHMOND, Va. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team kept its winning streak alive Sunday afternoon with an impressive 3-0 sweep of Bowie State University at the Big Ben's Home Court to conclude the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up II.

The Lady Bears won by scores of 25-8, 25-10 and 25-16 while improving to 8-6 overall with a six-match winning streak. The Bulldogs are now 1-6 on the year and 0-6 in the league. The victory puts Shaw at 6-0 in the CIAA.

The Lady Bears led 6-2 in the first set capped off by a service ace from senior libero Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI). BSU pulled within two after a kill from Madison Marshall but went on a 6-0 run to go ahead 15-6 as the Shaw outscored the Bulldogs 10-2 to finish the set.

The second set saw the Lady Bears groom a 12-4 lead that featured three kills from three different Shaw players. BSU closed the deficit to eight points (16-8) but SU put together an 8-1 route the Bulldogs could not recover from.

In a much closer effort during the third set, Shaw actually trailed midway until a kill by junior middle hitter Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) put the match at 12-all. The Lady Bears would then take a lead they would not relinquish down the stretch thanks to kills from Moten and senior right side hitter Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, US Virgin Island). Shaw put the game away with a 9-3 scoring margin for the 3-0 sweep.

Moten led the offensive attack with a match-high 11 kills on .688 hitting while senior middle hitter Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) added six attacks. Senior setter Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) finished with 11 assists and senior setter Christine Ngeve (Greensboro, NC) added a season-best seven assists.

Murphy registered 13 digs in the win for Shaw to lead the Lady Bears defense.

Collectively, the Lady Bears finished with a .318 hitting percentage that included a .387 showing in the second set.

Shaw will return to action Tuesday, Sept. 25 for a non-conference tilt at Lees McRae. Tuesday's match will be the second meeting between the two squads this season. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
