BEARS FOOTBALL SUFFER 29-16 DEFEAT TO FAYETTEVILLE STATE

Box Score

DURHAM, N.C.  – A 34-yard field goal by junior Beni Kinsemi (Charlotte, NC) brought the Shaw University football team within three with 6:13 left in regulation but seven unanswered points by Fayetteville State University iced the contest, as the Bears dropped a 29-16 decision to the Broncos on Saturday afternoon at Durham County Memorial Stadium.

The Bears fall to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the CIAA while FSU improves to 3-1 on the year and 2-0 in the league.

Senior Keon Marsh (Queens, NY) threw for 338 yards on 34-of-52 passes and touchdown while junior Marquis Gorham (Greensville, NC) led the receiving unit with nine catches for 97 yards and touchdown while graduate senior Dorrel McClain logged 10 attempts for 24 yards.

Fayetteville struck first when Collyn Anderson found Chris Brooks for a 37 yard touchdown in the first quarter but the Bears quickly responded with a score of its own thanks to 10 yard pass from Marsh to Gorham in the endzone to even the score at 6-all.

The offensive woes hit Shaw in the second quarter, as the Bears could not find their offensive groove. The Broncos took the lead with a 32 yard field goal in the second stanza before closing out the first half with two more scores to lead 23-6 at intermission over Shaw.

Facing a 17-point deficit after a scoreless third quarter from both teams, Shaw's defense applied pressure –resulting in blocked punt from junior Thurman Trapp (Columbia, SC) and sophomore Sean Snowden (Philadelphia, PA) recovering it in the endzone for a Bears touchdown at the 12:52 mark.

The Bears pulled within seven after Kinsemi nailed the 34 yard field goal but the Broncos managed to put together 54 yards of work on four plays for a one yard rushing touchdown for James Transou that sealed the deal, giving Shaw its first division loss on the year.

Sophomore Kevin Sherman (Powder Springs, GA) led the Bears defense with nine tackles while juniors Eric Walker (Miami, FL) and Devon Hunt (Hamlet, NC) both recorded eight tackles each.

Shaw will return to action Saturday, Oct. 13 at Livingstone College for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
