LADY BEARS SWEEP JOHNSON C. SMITH 3-0 ON SENIOR NIGHT

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C.  – The Shaw Lady Bears women's volleyball team rode the energy of the hometown crowd Wednesday night for Senior Night as the Lady Bears won their 14th-straight match and six consecutive match at home with a 3-0 sweep of Johnson C. Smith University Wednesday night in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

The Lady Bears recognized nine seniors prior to first serve that featured Alexandra Masnica (Chicago, IL), Aliani Adelis (Laveen, AZ), Jazmine Johnson-McCoy (Seattle, WA), Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, Puerto Rico), Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC), Quianna Myers (Orangeburg, SC), Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, US Virgin Island), Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) and Christine Ngeve.

The match was finished in three sets although the first and third sets were close in score (26-24, 25-3 and 25-22). The win improved the Lady Bears to 16-6 overall, 12-0 in the CIAA and 6-0 in the Southern Division. JCSU dips to 13-7, 10-3 CIAA and 5-2 in the South.

Shaw trailed 7-2 early in the first set. JCSU maintained control for most of the set until the Lady Bears scored three-straight to close the gap to one but a kill from Anaiah Mitchell gave the Golden Bulls a two-point cushion. However, a kill from Johnson-McCoy ignited a 5-1 scoring frame as the Lady Bears routed the Golden Bulls 26-24.

Opposite of the first set, the Lady Bears held a 7-2 lead in the second set. Shaw's stifling defense would allow the Golden Bulls to score just one point the rest of the way as the Lady Bears orchestrated an 18-1 run to cruise to a 25-3 set win.

The third set was more competitive as the Lady Bears owned a 6-1 lead but JCSU scored six unanswered points to tie the set at 7-7. The set would feature eight more ties down the stretch until a kill from Wattley sparked a two-point edge for Shaw (21-20). JCSU trailed 22-21 to Shaw after an attack error but back-to-back kills from junior Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) and junior Amari Fletcher (Phoenix, AZ) groomed a 3-1 run and the 25-22 set win and 3-0 sweep.

Shaw was led by Wattley who finished with a season-best 17 kills on a .375 hitting percentage while Olmeda-Gonzalez dished out a match-high 23 assists and Murphy collected a match-high 25 digs.

The Lady Bears will return to action Friday, Oct. 19 at Livingstone College at 6 p.m.
