LADY BEARS WIN IN FIVE-SET BATTLE AT CLAFLIN

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Trailing the match, 2-0, the Shaw University women's volleyball team earned a 3-2 win over Claflin University Saturday afternoon. The Lady Bears fell in the first two sets, 25-20 and 26-24 but won set three and four 25-14, 25-23 before claiming the fifth and final set, 15-10 inside Tullis Arena.

With the win, the Lady Bears improve to 19-3 overall as the Lady Panthers drop to 5-12 on the year.

As a team, Shaw hit .198, including .387 and .421 in the third and fifth sets. It was the Lady Bears fifth fifth-set win of the season, the first coming against Claflin for the year.

Shaw had four players in double figures offensively led by junior Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) and sophomore's Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) and Amari Fletcher (Phoenix, AZ) who all finished with 12 kills apiece while junior Jazmine Johnson-McCoy (Seattle, WA) added 10 kills and career-high seven blocks. Junior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) added 31 assists and seven digs while sophomore Alexandra Masnica (Chicago, IL) contributed 10 handouts. Junior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) recorded seven blocks and six kills and senior Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) had 21 digs in the win.

Despite being down 2-0, the Lady Bears rebounded in third frame thanks to a 12-5 advantage that would lead to a 13-8 scoring frame in favor of Shaw to take the 25-14 set win. After six ties in the fourth set, the Lady Bears scored three straight to hold a 13-10 lead over the Lady Panthers. From there, Shaw maintained their lead, including a 6-0 run, which led to the Lady Bears outscoring CU 12-11 down the stretch for the 25-23 win.

With a 6-3 lead in the fifth, the Lady Panthers pulled within two on (9-7) but the Lady Bears secured two points on attack errors by CU that would ultimately lead to a 6-3 spurt for Shaw and a 15-10 set victory and 3-2 match.

The Lady Bears will resume play and CIAA Southern Division action with a home match against Livingstone (Oct. 16) for their annual Dig Pink match at 6 p.m. All fans are encouraged to wear pink.
