BOWIE STATE RUINS SHAW'S CONFERENCE OPENER 55-13

Box Score

DURHAM, N.C.  – Backup quarterback Vidal Woodruff (Tampa, FL) threw for 137 yards and one touchdown but the Bulldogs Amir Hall threw for 346 yards and four touchdowns to ruin the Bears (0-4, 0-1 CIAA) 2016 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference opener in Durham County Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (2-2, 1-0 CIAA) scored a touchdown in each stanza, including four in the second that would give them a huge advantage. It was 35-0 in favor of Bowie State with 1:37 left in the second quarter before Shaw avoided a shutout when Woodruff found freshman Daren Jones (Miami, FL) for a 43 yard touchdown heading into the locker room for halftime.

As the third quarter got underway, BSU scored a touchdown and a field goal while Shaw struggled to complete drives.

Sophomore Uriah Bethea (Upper Marlboro, MD) gave the Bears some life in the fourth quarter when he dove into the end zone for his first career touchdown with 12:43 remaining in the contest with the score 53-13 but it would not be enough to supply a Bears comeback as BSU scored another field goal – good for 29 yards that sealed the deal.

Bowie State finished with 555 total offense, including 209 on the ground and 346 through the air, while Shaw tallied 251 total offense, 102 rushing and 149 passing.

Bethea rushed for 52 yards on nine carries, while Jones collected 80 yards on four receptions. Woodruff completed 15 of 28 passes and tossed one interception.

Defensively, freshman Jvonn Hudson (Charlotte, NC) had a game-high 12 tackles, including 10 solo and two assisted. Junior Andrew Cash (Semora, NC) and freshman Devon Hunt (Rockingham, NC) registered 10 and eight tackles, respectively.

For the Bulldogs, Chesson led the running unit with 89 yards on 12 carries, while Jordan Garrison had seven catches for 65 yards. Hall was 32 of 45 in pass completions and threw one interception. Jaylen Powell led the defense with five tackles, followed by four tackles from three other Bulldogs.

Shaw will hit the road next Saturday, Oct. 1 at Elizabeth City State. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
