LADY BEARS STUNNED BY UNC PEMBROKE, 3-0

Box Score

PEMBROKE, NC – The Shaw University women's volleyball team fell to UNC Pembroke, 3-0 Thursday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. The Lady Bears were suffered 25-15, 30-28 and 25-12 in three straight sets to the Braves, including a season-low five kills in the opening set.

The loss drops Shaw to 16-7 overall and 4-6 against non-conference opponents this season while UNCP improves to 3-25 overall in addition to snapping an eight-game losing skid in the process.

Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) had a team-best 11 kills and six digs while Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) and Nautica Vega (Elizabeth, NJ) added eight and seven kills, respectively.

The Lady Bears started off with a 2-0 lead but that quickly got erased as SU was held to just 15 points in the opening set, falling 25-15. In the second frame, Shaw showed a little more life after leading by six with the score standing 22-17 but UNCP kept its composure and was able to secure the set win sparked by a Lady Bears miscue. Down 11-3, Shaw struggled to get anything going offensively in the third set as the Braves hit .552 compared to the Lady Bears .152 to take the match victory.

Shaw will return to C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium for a highly anticipated match versus division foe Fayetteville State on Monday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.
