Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University football team scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter but their rally came up short short in the 30-16 home opening setback to Wingate University Saturday night at Durham County Memorial Stadium.
The Bears fall to 0-2 overall following the first-ever meeting between the Bulldogs, while Wingate improves to 2-0 on the season.
Shaw struggled offensively early in the game which resulted in 235 total offense and 29-yards rushing.
The Bears trailed 30-0 early in the fourth quarter before Shaw scored on a safety and two touchdowns in the final 6:09 left in regulation.
Senior Marquise Grizzle (Camden, NC) rushed for 39-yards on 19 carries, while sophomore wide receivers Trevante Long (Greenbelt, MD) accounted for 117-yards on five catches, scoring a touchdown and senior Atravius James (College Park, GA) had four touches for 33-yards and a touchdown scored.
Defensively, junior linebacker Moses White (Gordan Heights, NY) led the Bears with 17 tackles, including 10 solo and seven assisted. Defensive back Thomas Street (Compton, CA) added nine tackles for Shaw.
Wingate produced 409 yards of total offense on the evening with quarterback Kyle Johnson completing 17 of 30 for 193 yards. He passed and rushed for one touchdown , while connecting with seven different receivers.
Running back Lawrence Pittman accounted for two rushing touchdowns and wide receiver Jordan Berry scored a touchdown.
Shaw hits the road for a non-conference game between UNC Pembroke on Saturday, September 19. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
