Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team fell to Winston-Salem State University in a conference match on Monday evening as the Lady Rams shut out the Lady Bears in three sets, 25-23, 25-16 and 25-14.
The Lady Bears (17-10, 10-4 CIAA) were overwhelmed by a strong WSSU (17-6, 13-1 CIAA) offensive performance as the Lady Rams delivered 33 kills – earning a .316 hitting percentage – compared to 29 kills (.065 hitting percentage).
Freshman Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) led SU with six kills, while Morghan Robinson (Anaheim, CA) and Briana Wilson (Columbia, SC) tallied just five kills apiece. Setter Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) dished out 13 assist and eight digs while Deja Simpson (Orlando, FL) collected three service aces.
WSSU captured the first set after coming from behind (13-7) midway through. Not only was the Lady Rams able to tie the set and eventually take the lead, securing the 25-23 win. A quick 6-1 lead to start the second set afforded WSSU to lead the remainder of the set, posting 12 kills to cruise to the 25-16 win. Finally, in set three, the Lady Rams added nine kills compared to the Lady Bears 12 but that would not be enough as SU fell 25-14 to give WSSU the 3-0 sweep.
Shaw will return to action on Monday, Nov. 9th when they host Fayetteville State University inside CC Spaulding Gymnasium. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
