THE BEARS FALL AT JOHNSON C. SMITH, 17-10

Box Score

CHARLOTTE, N.C.  – Shaw University running back Marquise Grizzle rushed for 56 yards and one touchdown but the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University held off the Bears attempt to send the game into overtime with a 17-10 win on Saturday, Oct. 24th at the Irwin Belk Complex.

The setback marked the eighth loss for SU (0-8 overall, 0-5 CIAA) and a 0-3 mark in the Southern Division, while JCSU (3-5 overall, 2-3 CIAA) improves to 2-1 in divisional play. Despite the loss, the Bears tallied 239 (62 on the ground, 177 through the air) total offense compared to the Golden Bulls 138 (26 rushing, 112 passing).

Quarterback Terrence Shambry II completed 19-of-38 passes for 143 yards and three interceptions on the day, while Danny Webster, Jr. accounted for five catches for 49 yards. Andre Polite finished with six catches for 46 yards as well.

Defensively, Moses White paced SU with eight tackles (five solo and three assisted), following Roland Green with seven total including five solo and two assisted.

The Golden Bulls scored the game's first touchdown at the 7:48 mark in the first quarter and would hold on to the 7-0 advantage heading into intermission.

The Bears found themselves in a 10-0 disadvantage during the third quarter after JCSU's Erik Amaya kicked a field goal for 29 yards to expand the Golden Bulls with 9:00 left.

The next possession, Shambry's pass was tipped by JCSU's Brice Smith that led to an interception for Jamaal Tutt to rush for 21 yards for a touchdown, extending their lead 17-0 over the Bears.

Despite the deficit, the Bears were methodical on the following possession and drove the ball for 61 yards in eight plays before a 13 yard rush by Grizzle gave the visiting Bears their first score of the game (17-7).

After a sack and quarterback hurry from Green on defense, SU forced the Golden Bulls to go three and out on the next possession but the momentum would be short-lived as Quenton Rucker's pass was picked off by Carlos Thomas who returned the ball for 33 yards.

The next play down, Bruce Parker, Jr. caught a mishandled JCSU pass that resulted in a rush for 23 yards in the Golden Bulls territory but the Bears would settle for a 20 yard field goal to cut the lead to seven in the fourth quarter.

In the final seconds of the game, the Bears had the ball on the Golden Bulls 18 yard line but Shambry missed fired a pass intended for receiver Karocqus Jefferson that would preserve the win for JCSU.

Shaw will look to recover on Oct. 31st when they travel to Winston-Salem, NC to battle the Rams of Winston-Salem State University in a televised game on the Raleigh-Durham Fox 50 station. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
