Salisbury, NC – Shaw University suffered another heart-breaking one-point loss to Livingstone College on Saturday afternoon in Alumni Memorial Stadium in Salisbury, North Carolina. This represents the first loss to Livingstone since the returning of football in 2003.
Livingstone came out strong scoring the first points of the contest when Drew Powell completed a pass to Jalen Hendricks for a touchdown. The only touchdown scored by Shaw was a 65-yard rush by Marquise Grizzle Bears with 5:58 left in the first quarter. The Blue Bears immediately answered with a pass from Powell to Kemuel Brown, ending the first quarter 14-6.
The Bears opened up the second half of play with a two-play, 76-yard drive touchdown by Grizzle. The Bears defense was able to keep the Blue Bears scoreless in the second quarter with the Shaw Bears ending the half trailing Livingstone 14-12.
In the beginning of the third quarter, Freshman Defensive Back, Donald Jones scored a touchdown rushing from six-yards into the end zone. Quarterback, Trey Folston completed a pass to Kowaski Kitchens for a two point conversion giving Shaw its first lead of the game, 20-14.
The Bears were not able to keep the momentum going in the fourth quarter, not scoring another point for the remainder of the game. Shaw's defense struggle as well in the quarter, Livingstone managed to score one touchdown and field goal giving them a one point lead and the game 21-20.
Folston finished the game 12-for-28 for only 84-yards and throwing two interceptions. Running Back Marquise Grizzle rushed for a season high of 222-yards on 29 attempts and recorded two touchdowns, averaging 7.7 yards per carry.
Senior defensive back Derrick Washington had a total of seven sacks, six were solo. Roland Green recorded five solo sacks and one assisted, Keelan Jones had four solo tackles and one assisted as well.
With the loss the Bears drop to 2-5 in the season and 1-3 in conference play.
The Bears return to Durham County Stadium to host the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith for homecoming on Saturday, October 25th; kickoff is set to start at 1:00 pm.
