Men's Tennis Defeats Johnson C. Smith 7-2

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Shaw University Bears cruised to a 7-2 victory over Johnson C. Smith in CIAA tennis action on Sunday afternoon.

The Bears won all of their singles and doubles matches in straight sets with the only two JCSU wins coming as a result of forfeits.

In singles action, Shaw's Charles Silva defeated Darrell Sawyer in straight sets, winning 6-1, 6-1. Sergio Cuartas, the No. 2 seed for the Bears, defeated Yusuf Barnes 6-1, 6-1.

Juan Sanchez, Andre Monti and Samuel Padilla all won their singles competition matches for the Bears. Sanchez won his 6-1, 6-0 while Monti and Padilla didn't allow their opponents to win a game as they both won 6-0, 6-0.

Johnson C. Smith's Sharif Axiam picked up the victory in the final match of singles action, winning via forfeit due to Shaw not fielding enough players.

In doubles action, Silva and Cuartas teamed up to defeat the JCSU duo of Sawyer and Dion Chever, 8-1. Sanchez and Padilla won their doubles match when they defeated Barnes and Kia Brewington, also with a score of 8-1.

Axiam and his partner, Tobias Whitley, won the final match of doubles action via forfeit due to Shaw not having a third doubles team.
