FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Shaw volleyball team dropped three matches at the CIAA Volleyball Roundup held Saturday and Sunday on the campus of Fayetteville State. The Lady Bears opened Saturday by losing in straight sets to Virginia Union, then came back in the afternoon and lost 3-0 to Elizabeth City State. On Sunday, the Lady Bears closed out the roundup with a 3-0 loss to Chowan.
Virginia State swept the morning match with a score of 25-12 in the first set, then identical 25-10 scores in the second and third sets.
Against VSU, Shaye Walton, Crystal Gordon and Sashane Watson all had four kills to lead Shaw. Watson had nine digs and Courtnee Kelly had eight assists.
The Lady Bears had a better showing against Elizabeth City State, dropping the three sets with scores of 25-16, 25-20 and 25-21.
Watson led the Lady Bears with nine kills in the afternoon match while Gordon had six. Kelly had 22 assists in the match, Watson seven digs, and Gordon two service aces.
Shaw struggled even more against a powerful Chowan squad, dropping the three sets 25-12, 25-13 and 25-9.
Gordon had seven kills to lead Shaw while Kelly added to her assists total with 12. Gordon and Tyler Page each had six digs and Shay Walton had one block.
Tomorrow morning at nine, the Lady Bears take on Chowan to close out their portion of the roundup. They return home Thursday to host Fayetteville State. The match begins at 6:00 p.m. at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium on Shaw's campus. The game is free and open to the public.
