RALEIGH, N.C. - The Shaw University volleyball team dropped three straight sets to Fayetteville State in a CIAA matchup held at Shaw's C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium Thursday night. FSU won the matches 25-16, 25-16 and 25-18.
The Lady Broncos remain undefeated in CIAA play, with an 11-0 conference mark - 14-2 overall. The Lady Bears drop to 7-10, 3-7 in the conference.
Shaw did not take their first lead until the third set, when they broke on top early, building a 3-0 lead when Sashane Watson had her first service ace of the match. Her next service ace gave the Bears a 13-9 lead.
The Lady Bears still held the lead at 16-13, but the Lady Broncos reeled off nine points on Molly Farrington serves, only ending when Crystal Gordon got a block for Shaw, making the score 22-17. Shaw would score another point, but FSU closed out the decisive third set 25-18.
Watson led the Lady Bears in kills with seven, digs with nine and service aces with two. Gordon had six kills, whil Courtnee Kelly had 20 assists to pace the squad.
FSU was led by Jessica Hardy with seven kills, while JaMisha Jordan led the Lady Broncos with 16 digs. Farrington had 14 assists while Paige Horne had 10.
Shaw returns to action Monday when they host cross-town rival Saint Augustine's. The match, at 6:00 p.m., will be held in the C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium on Shaw's campus.
