Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Lady Bears started slowly in their three-set loss to Fayetteville State, but Shaw made the second and third sets close before losing to the Lady Broncos 3-0 Monday night in a game played at Capel Arena.
The Lady Broncos improve to 14-0 in the CIAA, 19-5 overall, while the Lady Bears fall to 5-10 in conference and 10-15 overall. Shaw currently holds the fourth and final playoff spot in the Southern Division with a 3-6 record, with next Monday's match against cross-town rival likely deciding the matter.
FSU got off to a fast start in the first set, scoring 12 straight points before Sashane Watson got her first of four kills in the first set. The match ended on a 13-13 point split, with the early lead giving the Lady Broncos the easy 25-13 win.
The Lady Bears built an early lead in the second set, gaining an 11-5 advantage off of kills from Watson and Shaye Walton and some key serves from Courtnee Kelly. They still led 13-6 when Taylor Norris killed a shot and gave FSU back the serve. The Lady Bears still led 15-12 when Molly Farrington started a five-point service run that gave the Lady Broncos a 16-15 lead.
After a quick Shaw point, Fayetteville scored another three, all but putting the game out of reach and going on to a 25-19 win. Watson had another outstanding set, getting eight kills.
In the third set, the Lady Bears fell behind, trailing 20-14 late. The Lady Bears got a three-point service run from Walton to pull to within three at 23-20, but FSU served out the set for the win.
Watson finished the match with 12 kills - all in the first and second sets. Walton had seven kills. Kelly led the Lady Bears with 20 assists and Arielle Fairley had nine digs to lead the team.
Joylene Thompson finished with nine kills for the Lady Broncos with Jessica Hardy adding another eight. Jordan had 18 digs and Paige Horne had 22 assists to lead FSU.
Shaw closes out its home schedule Thursday night when they host Saint Andrew's Presbyterian with first serve set at 6:00 p.m. The game is Senior Night when the Lady Bears will honor senior Crystal Gordon. The match will be played at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium on the Shaw campus.
The Lady Bears finish their regular season on Monday when they travel to Saint Augustine's for the critical match that will determine which of the two schools will qualify for the CIAA Tournament. Game time for that match is 6:00 p.m. Both games are free and open to the public.
