[St. Petersburg, FL] -
Junius Chaney scored 10 points in overtime to power Shaw to a win over previously undefeated Eckerd 78-73 in the final game of the Eckerd College Thanksgiving Classic.
The game started from the perimeter, with both teams launching threes with abandon. Shaw put up 18 beyond the arc while the Tritons attempted 28. In the end, though, it came down to inside play - most specifically that of Chaney - in the overtime period.
With the score tied at 64 at the end of regulation, an exchange of free throws had the tally tied at 66 when Chaney hit a jumper in the paint to give the Bears a two-point lead. The Tritons hit a three to reclaim the lead, but Chaney put in the rebound of his own missed layup to give the Bears the advantage.
Eckerd came back, scoring a bucket and two free throws to extend their lead to three before Tony Smith hit a trey to tie the score at 73. Eckerd would not score again, while Chaney slammed home a dunk and hit another pair of free throws. Eddie Dawson added a single free throw to give the Bears the 78-73 win.
Despite Chaney's prowess at the line, the Bears struggled with free throws, hitting only ten of 19 if Chaney's six-for-six performance is excluded. With his shots added, Shaw was 16-25 - for only 64 percent from the line.
Fortunately for the Bears, Eckerd could not hit from either the free throw or the three point line. The Tritons may have launched 28 threes, but they connected on only eight. They went 19 for 31 from the charity stripe, for a 61.3 percentage.
The Bears trailed early, allowing Eckerd to score the first five points of the game. The Bears then went on a 21-4 run, keyed by Tony Smith's seven points. With 10:47 left in the first, Dawson hit a three that would conclude the run and give Shaw a 21-9 lead.
The Tritons then chipped away at the lead, trimming the Shaw advantage to four when Alex Bodney hit a three, making the score 26-22 in favor of the Bears with 5:34 left in the half.
Two minutes later, Lance Kearse would hit a layup, get fouled and hit the free throw to tied the game at 28. Tony Smith answered with a jumper from beyond the arc, giving the Bears a three-point lead. The teams would exchange buckets the rest of the way with Shaw going into the locker room at the half with a 34-31 lead.
The Bears opened the second half with a small run, extending their lead to nine with two buckets and two free throws in the first two minutes of the half. Woody Taylor hit a three for the Tritons to end Shaw's scoring run and begin Eckerd's path back to the lead.
With 9:54 left in the game, Darrien Mack had a ferocious dunk that gave Eckerd their first lead since the early minutes of the game. He sank a free throw to extend the lead to two.
Mohammed Abdur-Rahim hit two free throws to tie the game and Alvin hit a three to give the Bears back the lead.
The two teams went on a three spree over the next minute. Kearse sank a three to tie the game before Smith hit one from beyond the arc to give Shaw back the lead. With 7:07 left in the game, Bodney hit a three to again tie the game and then Kearse hit another to give Eckerd the three-point lead, 55-52.
The two teams essentially exchanged buckets for most of the rest of the game. With 3:07 left in the game, Alvin hit a three that gave Shaw a 61-59 lead.
With 1:30 showing on the clock, Wayne Sears, Jr. drove the lane for a layup that tied the score at 62.
After a Shaw timeout with a minute left, Mack stole the ball for the Tritons. With 36 seconds left, Eckerd called a time out. Coming out of the break, Chaney fouled, sending Kearse to the line where he hit one of two, giving the Tritons a 63-62 lead with 32 seconds left.
After bringing the ball upcourt, the Bears called timeout with 28 seconds showing on the clock. Alvin's layup missed the mark, but Chaney pulled in the rebound, then made good on the shot, giving the Bears a 64-63 lead, but leaving 16 seconds on the clock.
With six seconds left, Smith fouled Kearse, but the Triton made only one of two. Alvin's last second three was off the mark and the game went into overtime.
As a team, Shaw hit 27 of 51 for a 52.9 shooting percentage. Alvin led the Bears with 24 points. Smith had 23 and Chaney finished with 16. Chaney led both teams with 12 rebounds. Alvin had four assists to lead Shaw.
Shaw's defense kept Eckerd off balance and they completed only 40.4 percent of the 57 shots they put up. Five Tritons finished the game in double digits, led by Kearse with 20. Mack added another 14, Sears 12, Taylor 11 and Bodney 10. Mack had five rebounds to lead Eckerd.
Shaw is now idle until December 13 when they travel to Pensacola to take on West Florida at 7:00 p.m. The Bears do not play at home until January 7 when they host Virginia State in a 4:00 p.m. contest.
