[MOUNT OLIVE, NC] - The Shaw volleyball team finished the Mount Olive College Volleyball Classic 0-3 this weekend, dropping matches against Belmont Abbey, Virginia Union and host Mount Olive.
Despite the three losses, Shaw's Shaye Walton was named to the All-Classic Team, having led the Lady Bears in kills and digs during the three matches.
In the first match of the weekend, the Lady Bears suffered their only sweep of the Classic, losing 3-0 to Mount Olive, 25-16, 25-22, and 25-14. Walton led the Lady Bears in kills with ten. Daniela Archibold led the team with seven digs and Cortnee Kelly led the team with 12 assists.
After two tough sets against Belmont Abbey, 25-7 and 25-12, the Lady Bears rebounded with a 25-23 set win before dropping the fourth set 25-14. Crystal Gordon had 15 kills to lead Shaw and Walton had 13. Walton also had 13 digs to lead the team and Kelly had 26 assists.
In their final match of the Classic, the Lady Bears faced CIAA foe Virginia Union. Shaw again dropped the first two sets - this time 25-17 and 25-14 - and then won a hard-fought third set 27-25. They then lost the fourth set 25-18. Gordon led the Lady Bears with 14 kills while Walton had 12. Kelly again led the Bears with 23 assists and Michelle Oliver and Jolene Arroyo lead Shaw with ten digs apiece.
The Lady Bears take the court again on Monday as they travel to Winston-Salem to take on WSSU. They return home Friday for their final game of the season in a match against Saint Augustine's at 6:00 p.m.
