Lady Bears Come Up Short Against St. Augustine's, 3-0

Box Score

(RALEIGH, N.C.)- It wasn't a good outing in Shaw Head Coach Douglas Hunter's first appearance against his alma mater Thursday evening at Shaw (3-7, 3-7 CIAA).

Hunter's Lady Bears volleyball team lost in three straight games, 25-15, 25-16, and 25-21. Hunter's feelings on the game were short and to the point, "Not satisfied. We had a lack of execution of the game plan."

Early in the first game there were some communication errors between the Shaw players that hampered the Lady Bear cause. Saint Augustine's (10-5, 8-2 CIAA) took advantage of those errors and topped the overmatched Shaw team by jumping out to an early 12-4 lead.

Saint Augustine's was led by their junior outside hitter, Kathryn Tokarski from Watson, Saskatchewan, Canada. Tokarski's power was unrivaled by anyone on the court. She led the game with 15 kills and had only four errors leading to an astounding .324 attack percentage.

The Lady Bears tried to counter with some combinations from Ashley Johnson and Sharetta Riggins, but came to no avail. Frustrated and overwhelmed through the first two games, Shaw did improve in the latter stages of the second game and the entire third game.

Lady Bears sophomore Cydnie Randolph from Detroit, MI, reeled off five straight service points in a valiant effort to cut the deficit towards the end of the second game.

Shaw was led, once again, by their senior outside hitter, Riggins, who had eight kills and eight digs.

CIAA Rookie of the Week, Shaw's Jeneva Carner, had four kills and 14 digs as she looked to continue her recent successes on the volleyball court. Carner said, "The team needs to communicate better and have a better attitude throughout the game. Our main focus should be to stay positive."

Saint Augustine's looked strong throughout the game and showed few signs of sloppy play. "The key was playing with urgency. They gave a complete effort. Not only did we beat our cross-town rival, but we stayed tied for first place in the division", said Saint Augustine's Head Coach Covance Mortimer.

The Lady Falcons will look to continue their inspired play on Tuesday, September 28 in another away game when they take on the Lady Broncos from Fayetteville State at 6 p.m.

Shaw will look to bounce back after a bad loss in a quick turnaround game as they host their first non-conference game of the year against North Greenville. The game will be in Spaulding Gymnasium at 6 p.m.
