Hunter, Lady Bears Claim First Victories of the Season at CIAA Round-Up

Box Score

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.)- Sharetta Riggins, Jeneva Carner, and Jade Bibb combined for 78 kills, 18 service aces, and 86 digs this weekend as the Lady Bears went 3-0 at their second CIAA Round-Up this season.

Not only did these three wins mark the first wins of the season for the volleyball program, but they also marked the first victories for first-year head coach Douglas Hunter.

Hunter said, "Three in a row is excellent. These wins are good for the school and the team. The wins allowed us to rethink about where we need to be. There is a lot more enthusiasm surrounding the team."

The Lady Bears beat three conference foes from the Northern Division while in Fayetteville: Lincoln (PA), Bowie State, and Saint Paul's.

Against their first opponent, Lincoln (PA), the Lady Bears won in three straight games, 25-17, 25-11, and 25-20. Lady Bears newcomer, sophomore Cydnie Randolph from Detroit, MI, started off strong as she ripped off five straight service points to give Shaw an early 10-4 advantage.

Aside from Randolph's service brilliance, Ashley Johnson (left) set up the majority of the offensive attack with a team high 13 assists.  On the weekend. Johnson had a sterling 73 if the team's 77 assists.

The Star of the Match was Riggins. Riggins was in true form, notching 11 kills and six digs.

After playing only one game on Saturday, the Lady Bears came out on Sunday and played two games back-to-back against Bowie State and Saint Paul's.

In their second game, the Lady Bears defeated Bowie State in thrilling fashion in five sets, 25-20, 19-25, 19-25, 25-17, and 15-9. The Lady Bears came back from a 2-1 deficit in games by winning the last two games, including a 15-point fifth set. Down 20-18 in the first game, freshman phenom Michelle Oliver lifted the Lady Bears to seven straight service points, as Shaw took the first set.

Once again, the Lady Bears were set up by Johnson who had a game high 26 assists to go along with two service aces. Along with Johnson's help, Randolph came through in the clutch by ripping off nine straight service points in the fourth game and four straight in the fifth game. Combining with Riggins' 19 kills on the match, Bibb showed that she can attack and defend with her eight kills and nine digs.

In the Lady Bears third, and last, game of the Round-Up, they took on the Lady Tigers from Saint Paul's and won in four games, 21-25, 25-18, 25-16, and 25-14. Again, Riggins came up huge for the Lady Bears accumulating 17 kills and 18 digs. As a whole, the team had 42 kills and 49 digs.

Johnson had a weekend high 34 assists against Saint Paul's while Carner had eight kills and 11 digs.

The performance of the Lady Bears in the fourth game helped solidify their third straight victory. Led by Michelle Oliver's seven straight service points in the fourth game, Shaw came out and claimed a foothold on the game.

The Lady Bears will play their next home match on Thursday, September 23 against cross-town rival Saint Augustine's, followed by another home match the next day against North Greenville. Both games will start at 6:00 p.m. at the C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium on the Shaw University campus.

Coach Hunter, whose alma mater is Saint Augustine's, said, "The St. Aug. game is going to be a great game. The Head Coach and I coached together and I coached their Assistant Coach. It will be a great game that will be very competitive. The three wins will help carry the momentum for Thursday."
