Shaw Loses in Straight Sets to Fayetteville State

(Fayetteville, NC) – The Shaw volleyball team proved Friday that there are differences in 3-0 losses as they dropped a match in three straight to Fayetteville State. 

 

On Tuesday, the Lady Bears (3-9, 3-8 CIAA) had dropped a game in three sets to Livingstone, but while the outcome was the same, the performance was vastly improved. 

 

While Livingstone shared a similar record to Shaw, the Lady Broncos (8-4, 8-3 CIAA) came into the game second in the Western Division of the CIAA. 

 

In all three sets, Shaw held their own through the early half of the game, holding leads of as much as six before allowing the Lady Broncos to go on a scoring run to close out the set.

 

In the first, the Lady Bears led 9-3, but the Lady Broncos outscored Shaw 22-9 to close out the set for the 25-18 win. 

 

In the second, the two teams fought evenly for the first half of the set.  With the score tied at 10, the Lady Broncos went on a 9-3 scoring run, finally taking the set 25-19. 

 

In the third, while the Lady Bears held it close early, Fayetteville state eventually built a 16-9 lead as Achari Mainor ran off five straight service points.  Shaw dropped the third set 25-16.

 

Sharetta Riggins led the Lady Bears with 11 kills and seven digs.  Ashley Johnson led the team with 12 assists. 

 

The Lady Bears return to action Friday, October 8, when they host Winston-Salem State at 6:00 p.m. at C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
