RALEIGH, N.C. — Shaw University Athletics has announced the addition of women's flag football as its newest varsity sport. With competition set to begin in the spring of 2027, Shaw will begin building its program immediately.
The program will compete under the banner of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, which has officially recognized women's flag football as a conference-sponsored sport, marking a significant step forward for the game's growth and visibility at the collegiate level.
"
Shaw University is proud to continue expanding opportunities for our student-athletes with the addition of women's flag football," comments
Shaw University Interim Athletic Director Dr. Randy McClure. "As the CIAA moves forward in officially recognizing the sport, we are excited to be part of this historic moment and to provide a platform for young women to compete, lead, and excel."
The introduction of women's flag football aligns with
Shaw University's ongoing commitment to enhancing its athletic offerings while supporting emerging sports that continue to gain national momentum. Flag football has seen rapid growth across high school, collegiate, and professional levels, fueled in part by increased visibility and support from national governing bodies.
