RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw men's and women's tennis teams were victors on the court this season, and now they are winners in the classroom.
Eight players earned Division II Scholar-Athlete recognition for the 2022-23 season from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). In addition to the individual accolades, both the Bears' and Lady Bears' teams garnered ITA Division II All-Academic Team honors.
The Shaw Scholar-Athletes were
Dana Moreno,
Jessa Michieli,
Chetna Kumari,
Anja Antonijevic and
Hafsa Sanhaji on the women's team and
Paul Charvoz, Lorenzo Martinelli and Mahajan Aakarshit on the men's squad.
The Shaw selections were among 1,091 ITA Division II Scholar-Athlete honorees. The Shaw men's and women's teams were among 161 teams that earned ITA Division II All-Academic accolades.
In the 2023 season, both the Bears' and Lady Bears' tennis teams qualified for the NCAA Division II Regionals in their respective sports. The Lady Bears advanced by capturing their fifth straight CIAA women's tennis crown and the Bears earned a men's at-large bid.
To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must meet the following requirements:
- Have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year
- Be listed on the institutional eligibility form
To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must meet the following requirements:
- Have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale),
- All student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form, and
- All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year
