RALEIGH, N.C. – In the final home match of the season, the Shaw University men's tennis team snapped a four-game losing skid with a 6-1 victory over the visiting Chowan University Hawks Saturday afternoon at Worthdale Park.
The Bears swept all three doubles, including a 6-0 win at the No. 3 spot from the junior tandem of Ilya Skobelev (Lelyshenko, Rostov-on-Don) and Javier Godoy Gomis (Alicante, Spain) while juniors Romain Hennebelle (Montijny-Lengrain, France) and Guillermo Franco (Sevilla, Spain) posted a 6-2 win at the No. 2 doubles. The duo of junior Martin Munoz (Bogota, Colombia) and sophomore Panashe Garah (Bedord, MA) punched in a 6-2 victory at the No. 1 doubles position for SU's one point advantage heading into singles play.
It was all Shaw in one-on-one action as the Bears claimed three matches 6-0, 6-0 from Hennebelle (No. 3), Franco (No. 5) and Gomis (No. 6), respectively. Munoz gave Shaw their fifth point with a 7-5, 6-4 victory at the No. 1 singles while Skobelev outlasted his opponent 7-6, 6-4 for the win at No. 2 singles. Garah took his opponent to three sets before falling 6-7, 7-6, 10-3 at the No. 4 position, giving the Hawks their lone point on the day.
The Bears will look to wrap up the 2021 slate with a pair of road matches at Bluefield State (Apr. 16) and Bluefield (Apr. 17). Game times are set for 1 p.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.
