RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's tennis was defeated by Barton College, 4-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Worthdale Park.
The Bears fall to 1-3 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 7-2 on the year.
Barton took the doubles point early when their No. 3 doubles swung past senior Ilya Skobelev (Lelyshenko, Rostov-on-Don) and junior Romain Hennebelle (Montijny-Lengrain, France), 6-1. The Bears faltered when junior Guillermo Franco (Sevilla, Spain) and junior Javier Godoy Gomis (Alicante, Spain) fell 6-1 at the No. 2 doubles. Junior Martin Munoz (Bogota, Colombia) and sophomore Panashe Garah (Bedford, MA) scored two points but it would not be enough for a Bears doubles win as the tandem eventually succumbed, 6-2.
The Bulldogs took wins in three of four singles as Munoz was the lone Bear to capture a triumph three set win (6-7, 6-6, 7-5) at the No. 2 position.
Up next, Shaw will host Chowan on Saturday, Apr. 3 at 1 p.m.
