DANVILLE, VA - The Shaw University men's tennis team fell to 1-2 overall on the season with a 7-2 setback at Averett University (3-2) on Sunday afternoon. The Bears picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles but could not overcome a strong showing by the Cougars at home.
Junior Martin Munoz (Bogota, Colombia) and sophomore Panashe Garah (Bedford, MA) paired together for an 8-2 victory at the No. 1 doubles position while a tandem of senior Ilya Skobelev (Lelyshenko, Rostov-on-Don) and junior Romain Hennebelle (Montijny-Lengrain, France) earned a 8-4 victory at the No. 3 doubles.
Unfortunately, the doubles success would not translate into singles play as the Bears went 0-6 against the Cougars. The closets single match came from Skobelev at the No. 3 slot before he fell 2-6, 6-3, 2-6. Garah also took his opponent to three sets before falling 3-6, 7-5, 7-10 at the No. 4 spot.
Shaw will return to action and look to snap their losing skid with road slate on Wednesday, Mar. 17 against Virginia State University. First serve is slated for 2 p.m.
