BEARS TENNIS EDGE VIRGINIA STATE, 5-4

RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University men's tennis picked up their second consecutive win with a 5-4 edge over the visiting Virginia State University Trojans on Friday afternoon at Lions Park. The win improved the Bears overall record to 2-5 on the season while VSU slips to 2-5 as well.

Friday's clash was the second meeting between the two teams with Shaw taking a 6-3 win over the Trojans on Mar. 24 but today's match would not be an easy task for the Bears as they trailed 2-1 after doubles competition.

No. 1 doubles duo freshman Oscar Del Granado (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) and junior Ngonidzashe Makambwa (Mabelreign Harare, Zimbabwe) came away with the 8-0 victory but the Bears still faced the 2-1 deficit heading into singles competition.

Granado would finish first, owning a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 1 singles, followed by a 6-2, 6-2 win from junior Daniel Ac (Kikinda, Serbia) at the No. 3 singles to give the Bears a 3-2 lead. Makambwa would be a 6-1, 6-2 victor at the No. 2 singles and sophomore Destine Udofe (Brampton, ON) clinched a 6-3, 6-1 that would hold off the Trojans who ended up winning the No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively.

Shaw will begin a three-match road stretch with contests at Bluefield State (Apr. 4), Bluefield (Apr. 4) and William Peace (Apr. 6).
