MEN'S TENNIS FALLS TO CHOWAN IN CIAA TITLE MATCH

RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University men's tennis team secured one of three doubles matches but could not hold on in singles as the Bears suffered a 5-1 loss to Chowan University in the finals match to finish runner-up in the 2016 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men's Tennis Championship Saturday at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center.

All-CIAA duo Diego Choque (Tarija, Bolivia) and partner Javier Saez (Concepcion, Chile) earned a 9-7 victory at the No. 2 doubles but that would be the lone point for Shaw the entire match as the Hawks edged Shaw at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles for an 8-2 and 8-6 wins, respectively.

In singles, the Bears fell short at the No. 1 and No. 4 slots before CU's Matueusz Izycki edged out Choque at the No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-4) to take the match win.

Shaw concluded its season with a record of 10-6 overall record, while the Hawks post a 19-6 overall record.
