MURFREESBORO, NC – The Shaw University men's tennis team won a pair of 8-1 matches over Virginia State University (7-4, 4-3 CIAA) on Sunday afternoon. The contest was a makeup match due to inclement weather originally scheduled for March 20.
In the first match the Bears (6-2, 4-1 CIAA) took a 3-0 lead in doubles to win five of six singles matches to take the match 8-1. Daniel Ac (Kikinda, Serbia) and Bach Tran (Leipzig, Germany) teamed for an 8-4 win at the No. 1 doubles, before Diego Choque (Tarija, Bolivia) and Javier Saez (Concepcion, Chile) secured an 8-3 win at the No. 2 doubles. Guido Margiotta (Ceronel Suzarez, Argentina) and Marico Gonzalez (Leon, Mexico) took down Alex Walker and Keon Halley for the No. 3 doubles with a score of 8-2.
Ac dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to VSU's Kenes Sultan at the No. 1 singles but Shaw would win five-straight to secure the days first match of the day, 8-1.
Similar fashion in the day's second matchup as the Bears swept doubles and earned five-of-six wins in singles. The only loss in singles was from Ac, who suffered a 6-3, 6-4 to Sultan.
Shaw will return to action on April 8 as they travel to Durham, NC to face North Carolina Central University in a non-conference matchup. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
