RALEIGH, NC – Shaw University freshman Mauricio Gonzalez (Leon, Mexico) broke a 4-all tie with a 6-1 and 6-4 victory over Barton's Robert Taylor to help the Bears men's tennis team to the 5-4 non-conference win over the Bulldogs on Friday afternoon at Lions Park.
With the win, Shaw improves to 2-1 on the campaign while the Bulldogs drops to 5-6 overall.
The Bears received one victory (8-6) in doubles play from the duo Guido Margiotta (Ceronel Suarez) and Gonzalez. In singles, Diego Choque (Tarija, Bolivia) defeated Nick Genest (6-4, 7-6, 7-5) before Margiotta battled it out with Jesus Gil (7-6, 5-7, 7-6) for the win and Bach Tran (Leipzig, Germany) clinched a 7-6, 2-6, 6-1 victory over Daniel Radu.
Shaw returns to action on Saturday (Mar. 5) as they compete in the CIAA Tennis Round-Up held at Lions Park in Raleigh, NC.
