MURFREESBORO, NC – Shaw University men's tennis fell to Chowan University in a close match that ended with a score of 5-4 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tennis Round-up in Murfreesboro, NC.
The setback snaps a five-game winning streak for Shaw (5-2, 3-1 CIAA), while the Hawks (11-6, 4-0 CIAA) extend its win-streak to four games with the win.
Shaw got its first point of the day, with one of the three doubles matches. Mauricio Gonzalez (Leon, Mexico) and Guido Margiotta (Ceronel Suarez) earned a 6-2, 3-6, 12-10 victory at the No. 3 doubles but the Bears trailed 2-1 heading into singles play.
Shaw won three of the six singles that included Bach Tran's (Leipzig, Germany) three set win (3-6, 6-4, 10-4) at the No. 3 singles, while Margiotta secured a 6-4, 2-6, 11-9 win at the No. 5 spot and Gonzalez clinched a 6-2, 3-6, 12-10 victory. Daniel Ac (Kikinda, Serbia), Javier Saez and Deigo Choque (Tarija, Bolivia) all suffered setbacks on the day.
The second contest between Shaw and Chowan has been rescheduled to April 22 in Rocky Mount, NC due to inclement weather.
Meanwhile, the Bears will look to recover from the loss on April 2 when they host Johnson C. Smith for a CIAA Southern Division matchup at Lions Park. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
