ETTRICK, Va. - The Shaw University men's tennis team advanced to the CIAA Championship with a 5-0 win over Virginia State in a match played Friday afternoon at the VSU Tennis Complex.
The Bears took a commanding 3-0 lead in doubles competition. Juan Sanchez and Bach Tran were the first to report a win with an 8-2 victory over K'wmane Tonkins and Delwin McCurdy.
Charles Silva and Sergio Cuartes downed Matthew Brown and Nicholas Brown 8-1 for Shaw's second point, while Gafur Sirojiddinov and Andre Monti closed out the doubles with a 8-2 win over Nicholas Pfab and Evan Dirksen.
Monti was the first to record a singles win with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over McCurdy. Sanchez then wrapped up the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Dirksen.
The Bears now advance to their ninth championship final in ten years where they will face the winner of the match between Chowan and Winston-Salem State. Weather permitting, the match will be held at the VSU Tennis Complex at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
