DURHAM, N.C. - The Shaw University men's tennis team went up a level Tuesday, travelling to Durham to take on Division I North Carolina Central. The Bears came away with the 5-2 win and improve their record to 17-2 on the season.
The Bears opened the competition by taking the single point for doubles, with the number one doubles team of Charles Silva and Juan Sanchez downing Jack Waissen and Fabrice George 8-4. Number three doubles Artur Latypov and Andre Monti defeated Jamal Hoyte and Tamina Kienka 8-5.
While Shaw's numbers one and two - Latypov and Gabriel Nictora, respectively - fell to their NCCU counterparts, the lower four singles all won their matches.
Silva was pushed the hardest, winning the first set over Jose Fabara 7-5, but dropping the second set 6-1. He rebounded to take the third and capture the point by a 6-2 mark.
Daniel Vasquez took his match at the number four slot by defeating Kienka 6-3 and 7-6, while Sanchez, in the fifth slot, had an easy 6-0, 6-1 victory. Finally, Monti defeated George 8-3 in a single-set match.
The Bears return to action Tuesday, April 10 when they close out their CIAA season by taking on Virginia Union in a 1:00 matchup at Biltmore Hills Park in Raleigh.
