(Ettrick, VA) – The Shaw men's tennis team finished its season by downing conference rival, and regionally ranked, Virginia State 7-2 – capping an undefeated run in the CIAA.
On the season, the Bears were 19-6 – with all but one loss coming to either Division I or regionally ranked opponents. They finish the CIAA season 12-0 – having beaten Johnson C. Smith and VSU – the CIAA's other regionally ranked teams – twice.
Virginia State finishes their regular season 16-7 overall, and 9-3 in the CIAA.
Four Shaw players finished their conference seasons undefeated, but for number one singles player Fabio Falcato, the road was a bit tougher. In his match against VSU's John Lanier, Falcato dropped the first set 6-4, but bounced back to take the second 6-2, and finished with a 10-4 count in the tiebreaker.
Shaw's Milos Stankovic and Medhi Ben-Cheikh each scored 6-1, 6-1 wins over their opponents. Stankovic faced Daron Jack, while Ben-Cheikh defeated William Richardson. Kalada Kienka also finished his CIAA season undefeated by sweeping Amir James 6-0, 6-0.
Antoine Jacobs (above) finished his season with only two losses in conference by winning 6-3, 6-1 over Travis Jones. Martin Faison suffered his second loss in conference as Harrison Gaskins topped him 6-2, 6-1. Faison's other loss in conference also came at Gaskins' hands.
Kienka and Stankovic finished their doubles season undefeated in the CIAA – and with only one loss overall – with an 8-2 win over James and Richardson. Also in doubles, Faison and Jacobs defeated Jones and Gaskins 8-4 while Falcato and Ben-Cheikh lost to Lanier and Jack 8-5.
The Bears will begin play in the CIAA Tournament on Thursday, April 15.
